Tanya's Journey: Strength, Resilience, and Community at CrossFit 1864
By Kike Yepes
When Tanya moved to London in 2021, she wasn't just stepping into a new role in a bustling city. She was embarking on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Diagnosed with Bipolar disorder just before the pandemic and having gained 35kg due to the ensuing challenges, Tanya knew she needed a fresh start, both mentally and physically.
The moment she heard about CrossFit from a colleague, she felt a spark. The reviews of CrossFit 1864 promised a safe and welcoming community, and so, she booked her induction on the very day she started her new job.
But the road wasn't smooth. "Initially, the challenge was being consistent with the classes," Tanya recalls. Work commitments and the sheer exhaustion of adapting to a new city and a new life made it hard to commit. "Kike, however, was amazing and kept checking in." This perseverance, this unwavering support, was the lifeline Tanya needed. It took about 6-9 months, but soon, she found herself in a routine, attending classes three times a week.
CrossFit 1864 didn't just become a place to work out; it became Tanya's sanctuary. "It's my happy place," she says, eyes lighting up with a mix of joy and nostalgia. The community she found there played a crucial role in this transformation. “I’m down 10kg, so still work to do but a big start to becoming a healthier, leaner version of myself.” The camaraderie and support from fellow members and coaches turned this box into a haven, a place where tears and sweat intermingle, pushing her to new heights.
One of her most memorable achievements? "Being able to run again without pain and squatting below parallel," she beams. And let’s not forget the clean and jerk at 45kg – a feat that not only surprised her but made her do a little happy dance. "Before CrossFit, I didn't know what a clean and jerk was."
The motivation to keep pushing comes from her friends at the box. "They won’t let me slack and believe in me more than I believe in myself," she says. The coaches, always approachable, ensure that no question is too trivial, fostering an environment where every goal feels attainable.
For those just starting, Tanya’s advice is golden: "CrossFit can seem intimidating, but it is scalable. The goal is to move, in whatever functional way you can." She debunks the myth that CrossFit is only for elite athletes, emphasizing that it’s about personal progress and improvement.
Tanya’s perspective on health and fitness has undergone a seismic shift since joining CrossFit 1864. “I never thought I’d be a person who goes to the gym five times a week,” she laughs. But now, she relishes the team vibe that comes with classes limited to ten people, enjoying the balance of personal attention and communal spirit.
Her goals are clear and focused: improving grip strength and gymnastics ability. She’s diligently working on foundational movements, aiming to achieve a toes-to-bar or a pull-up in the coming months. Stretching and mobility, particularly for her lower body, are also high on her agenda, addressing past injuries and enhancing her overall performance.
The community at CrossFit 1864 is the bedrock of Tanya’s fitness journey. “The support is incredible,” she says, describing the cheering, the comforting arm around a shoulder, the celebratory fist bumps. This network of encouragement and camaraderie is what keeps her grounded and motivated.
Balancing fitness with other aspects of life is a continuous process. For Tanya, having a routine helps. “I work out in the evenings, coming straight from work to the half 6 class.” This prevents her from overworking and ensures she prioritizes her well-being. Being an active member of the box instills discipline and provides a healthy perspective on the importance of rest and self-care.
Tanya’s story is one of resilience, transformation, and the power of community.
At CrossFit 1864, she found not just a gym, but a family that supports, challenges, and celebrates every step of her journey. And as she continues to push her boundaries, we can’t wait to see where this journey takes her next.
